On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah each met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
But we still don’t know why they met with the president or what they talked about.
On Sunday, the Rashtrapati Bhavan posted images of both encounters on X (previously Twitter).
At 12:41 PM on Sunday, the official X account of the President of India posted a picture of the meeting with the caption, “Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”
It wrote again about Home Minister Amit Shah calling on the President at 6:35 p.m., hours later. The post said, “Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation Shri Amit Shah called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”
The Prime Minister met President Murmu for the first time since his trip to the UK and the Maldives.
The meeting takes place during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, which began on July 21. Just last week, on Monday and Tuesday, both houses had a heated debate about Operation Sindoor.
The Lok Sabha accepted the President’s rule in Manipur for six extra months last Thursday. The upper house hasn’t talked on the motion yet, though. The President has been in charge of Manipur since February of this year.
The high-profile meetings are also happening when the Opposition is still protesting in Parliament about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral records in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections there. Before the state elections, the Opposition has asked for a full discussion of the process in Parliament.
This is also the first time the President and the Prime Minister have met since the US put 25% tariffs on India and a penalty on doing business with Russia that wasn’t made clear.
